Meatbird Cup Game 1 – Hosers defeat Oglethorpes 3-0

Heckuva game last night to kick off the Cup, with the Yellow Hosers notching a 3-0 victory behind the strong goaltending of Boo Davison.

Dun got the scoring going early with a tricky 5-hole shot that squirted through for a 1-0 lead.  Steve Gal then apparently made it 2-0 but the goal was called off by Oglethorpe assistant captain Bob Galavotti.  The goal will be reviewed by league officials on Thursday.

Back and forth the game went with lock down defense and stellar netminding until Mark Hoeful banged in a rebound to make it 2-0 with about 20 minutes to play.

With the goalie pulled, Green made a strong push in the final minutes, but was denied.  Pete Newton potted an empty netter to seal it.

Tom Evans made 74 saves in the losing effort.  The series resumes with a pivotal game 2 next Tuesday night.

We’re Number 2!

We “officially” finished in second place (tied for points with Ward’s and Marshrat’s, but we won the tiebreaker), 2 points out of 1st.  Led the league in goals (70) and differential (+34).  Pretty damn good season all in all.  Although I collected the jersey’s last night, I would like to come back with the same group next summer if you are interested (and Ruel doesn’t need to have his leg amputated).

Thanks to everyone for playing, and everything else you contributed.  Shawn and Crowley were great house chef’s, and we always had a cold beer waiting after the games.  Hell, the ice was even decent this year.

Fall Session at Hetland

I hope everyone is having a good summer.  Thankfully, it is almost over, as Fall Hockey is almost upon us.  That means it is time to ratchet up the off season training (Knight runs a windsprint session every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Tabor track, 5am sharp), sharpen the skates and check your equipment.

I received the Hetland schedule today, and we are slotted in our usual Tuesday night spot from 8:30-10PM.  12 games beginning Tuesday Sept. 3rd and running through November 19th.  Cost will be approximately $175.

As always, please let me know if you are IN / OUT /  SUB.  I usually need subs in the Fall pretty much every week.  We do have a number of guys who played last year who would be interested in a spot, so if you cannot commit, are injured or are unsure, I can put you on the SUB list and you will have 1st priority.

Paul and Tom, let me know your status for the Fall.  I have a couple other goalies who can fill in or take a spot if you cannot commit.

‘Birds Thrash Warriors 6-0

Guys…good win last night. Special thank you to Steve Gal for getting Crowley out of the rack. It makes me feel worse that we lost to those guys earlier in the season.

4 points out of 1st place with 2 games left. It’s a long shot, but we still have a slight chance. We win our last two and we should be in the top 3 for the season. We play those cheap bastards Ward’s from two weeks ago and I would really like to beat them. All (healthy) hands on deck if able to go. IN or OUT…let me know.

Also, Shawn Coffey would like to change up the sweaters for the last couple games. He sent me these options below. Please vote your preference and Shawn will place the order through his contacts…thanks!

Commitment

Special note on commitment….Jason Ruel goes to the wrong rink (Taunton) for the wrong time (7:20), realizes it, gets in his car, jets to Raynham and because of a delay to start our 7:00 game makes it only a couple minutes left…just look at this guy below and ask yourself, “Can I match his compete”?

Meatbirds Run Out of Gas 3-3

Reminiscent of the Bruins’ last game, the Summer Meatbirds ran out of gas in the final minutes and squandered a 3-1 lead.  Severely short-handed, they did manage to salvage a 3-3 tie, showing the True Grit the Meatbirds are famous for.  Goaltending was key in keeping the much younger and fully manned Wolves squad in check.
